Kathakali and Mohiniattam

Known as one of the oldest theatre forms of the world, Kathakali literally means 'story - play'. The elaborate makeup code signifies the character's nature. The Navarasas form the basis of Rasa-abhinaya in Indian classical dances. They are used to convey various emotions through a variety of facial expressions and hand gestures. The nine emotions are  Shringara (love), Hasya(laughter), Karuna (kind-heartedness or compassion), Raudra (anger), Veera ( courage), Bhayanaka (terror), Bheebhatsya (disgust), Adbutha (surprise), and Shantha (peace or tranquility). The name Mohiniattam literally means 'Dance of the Enchantress. It was developed in the tradition of Devadasi system, which later grew and developed a classical status.
